The Task at Hand


We have many ideas about the future directions that the organization we imagine building could take. We can easily imagine, for example, that over time it might evolve into a genuinely democratic grass roots political party. We can easily imagine this party calling itself the Party of True Democrats, with a platform of a developed agenda of policies that naturally grow from the basic concept of the Common Good. We can easily imagine a ringing motto for this new independent party: “If you don’t believe in True Democracy, then don’t call yourself a True Democrat”.

But we are not setting out to create a political party. We believe that the organization we hope to build should intently focus its entire efforts on developing the means to communicate one simple and very powerful Basic Message as widely as possible. In our opinion, sounding the drumbeat of the message of Democracy, the Common Good, and Enlightened Self-Interest, (to counter the greed based message of ‘conservatism’ that has been so successfully hammered into the public consciousness), should be the ‘be all’ and ‘end all’ of our initial goals and purpose.

But these are only our own ideas. As we have said over and over again throughout this paper, our one task, as democratic conveners, is to build the organization as a true democracy. It will be up to the citizen-members that populate the organization to decide what it will say, and do, and be.

With that in mind, we ask that those who come to this project with the desire to help build it, come with the determination not to control it, or to create it in any particular image or mold, save ONE, which is, of course, that it must be truly democratic.
