Chapter 8d
A Vision of Building Effective Communications
As we said, politics is a ‘numbers game’, and the numbers are very large. We MUST think BIG if we expect to make an impact in this ‘game’.
Imagine a truly democratic organization that empowers people to channel their frustrations into effective actions whose effects they can see all around them every day. Imagine the kinds of things that a group could do with the degree of resources to administer that we describe above. Imagine seeing powerful messages promoting the principles of Democracy and the Common Good on billboards in every community, or hearing them on public service type ‘ads’ on TV and radio. Imagine supporting a cable TV network, or simply buying blocks of time for programming on existing networks, to promote our message of Democracy, the Common Good, and the General Welfare of the common people. As we mentioned, many evangelical religious groups have done this for many years, to spread the ‘word of God’. There is absolutely no reason why WE can’t do it as well, to spread our powerful message supporting a moral cause. Imagine the educational, recruiting, and fund raising power in this scale of mass media operation.
Think BIG. Imagine financing motion pictures that employ the services of major stars who have a spiritual affinity for the message we are promoting, a morally enlightened message of the Common Good, a powerful message promoting the concept of people who all have concern for each other, who all have awareness of, and concern for, our common humanity. (It is easy to think of dozens of ‘stars’ who have shown their interest in just social causes).
Imagine financing the production and distribution of popular music that promotes such messages. Think about the major artists who might want to participate in such an effort. (We could name many artists who have easy access to communications media whose life-works have shown that they would be disposed to participate in an effort like this).
Imagine publishing children’s books, books and magazines for teen-agers, and even comic books, that promote the message of our concern for each other’s welfare and happiness. Imagine mass distribution of video materials on DVDs, which are nearly as cheap as printed paper handbills when produced in lots numbered in the millions.
Imagine developing all kinds and manner of channels of communication to support this Basic Message that if we want to survive as a species on this planet, we must develop our concept of the Common Good before we destroy each other in our greed and jealousy for power, and our selfish determination to gain advantage over one another.
This is a rough concept of what we imagine the initial purposes of this organization could (and must) be. Whatever it might eventually grow into, (a political party perhaps?), its initial purpose must be to communicate a simple and powerful Basic Message to hundreds of millions of people.
And the key to accomplishing such a purpose is money.
We believe that millions of citizens will be willing to pay such modest levels of dues to support and advance an organization that successfully broadcasts the Basic Message we feel in our hearts. We believe that millions of people yearn to hear this inspiring message expressed publicly, represented as our guiding social principle, to masses of people. We believe that large numbers of citizens will be willing to join and support such an organization most especially if we have confidence that we ourselves will have genuinely democratic control over how and where our dues, our united resources, are applied.
