Discuss the creation of an independent democratic organization to advance the Common Good

Chapter 1f
The Responsibility to Act
No hero can save us. We must save ourselves

A nation that has fallen as far into moral and procedural corruption as has ours, is very likely to be headed into the ruin of social calamities that will bring great pain to the guilty and the innocent alike. If we are to have any hope of avoiding such calamities, then those among us who are most aware of what is happening must take upon ourselves the responsibility to act.

In a nation whose leaders have surrendered their sense of morality and honor to greed, We, The People, must take upon ourselves the responsibility to find the means to re-assert our deep moral sense over the affairs of the nation. We ALL have ancestors who struggled and sacrificed for the cause of Democracy, for the cause of human freedom and equality. We must not turn our backs on these centuries of struggle that are the hard won legacy that our ancestors bequeathed to us. We must find the means to re-assert Democracy in this nation. We must re-assert a Democracy that holds this nation to be, as Lincoln imagined it, a nation “of The People, by The People, and FOR The People”. We must re-assert a Democracy in which preserving and protecting the Common Good, the General Welfare of The People, (as is proclaimed in our Constitution), is once again the sole and highest mandate of our democratic government.

We cannot sit by and expect that the inspiringly hopeful campaign rhetoric of Barack Obama can ‘save’ us. Even if we believe that his sincere intention is to turn this nation onto a different course, we must surely realize that one person alone cannot have the power to accomplish this. The power of the entrenched status quo is just too great, and we have already learned the ruthless nature of the power that opposes us. Any ‘savior’ is relatively easy to ‘neutralize’, (a tragic lesson that History has taught us time and time again). But the organized power of the citizenry would be more than any mere ‘special interests’ could withstand.

It is up to us, the citizens of this nation who are awake to the dangers that we face, those of us who understand the concept of enlightened self-interest, the concept of the Common Good, to organize ourselves in such a fashion that will impart political power to our united will.
