Discuss the creation of an independent democratic organization to advance the Common Good

Chapter 10-I-a
Prototype Representational Scheme

We want to create a powerful organization made up of people whose individual interests, and whose efforts to guard those interests, are united by the power of True Democracy into a shared perception of their enlightened self-interest. As we mentioned previously, we think that this is what True Democracy inherently does. It facilitates the recognition of the Common Good.

The representational system we imagine, as we believe it must function in this organization’s hierarchy, is significantly different than that which we have in the US political system. We imagine that representatives, rather than being elected, and then having insular autonomy over decision making between elections, (as in the existing State Legislatures and the US Congress), will be burdened with the obligation to actually represent the considerations and determinations of those who elected them. They will be required to use the tools of interactive communication that we will make available through digital communications technology, to determine the active and current will of their constituents on any issue. Thus, representatives will be held much more closely accountable to their constituents than they are in the current US political system.

This is a prime example of the ways in which exploitation of the full potential of new digital technologies can facilitate the actualization of True Democracy to a degree that has never before been possible. The ease of immediate interactive communications throughout a properly devised system can ensure that the Will of The People can be easily and effectively made known, in an efficiently short time frame, on any issue, at every level of a democratic representational hierarchy.

We imagine devising a system in which diverse bodies of opinion are represented throughout the representational hierarchy, not just the prevailing opinions of majorities. Much creative attention will need to be given to devise such a system. Many different formulary schemes for electing representatives could be devised, and each must be thoroughly evaluated, so that the best possible schemes can be implemented.
