Organizational Metaphor
The Roots, the Trunk, and the Branches
When we use the schematic metaphor of ‘branches’ to describe this structure of governance, we must keep in mind that these ‘branches’ all grow out from a single ‘trunk’, which arises from the ‘roots’. Using this simple metaphor we might imagine that the ‘roots’ represent The People, the citizen-members of the organization, and the ‘trunk’ represents the most basic units into which The People are organized into functioning decision-making groups. In the chapters that follow we’ll use this crude though useful metaphor of Roots, Trunk, and Branches to fill in this sketch.
